How it works

What changes

  • Transparency. JPG has no alpha channel, so transparent areas become white. Choose PNG to keep them.
  • Metadata. The output is re-encoded from pixels, so EXIF data and the embedded colour profile are not carried over.
  • Colour. Output is standard 8-bit sRGB. An HDR or wide-gamut AVIF can therefore look flatter than in a viewer that supports it.
  • Animated AVIF. You get the first frame only, and the page says so before you convert.

Browser support

Unlike HEIC, AVIF is read by your browser's own decoder. Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari can do this; on an old browser the file is rejected with a clear message rather than producing a broken image.

Questions & limits

Is my image uploaded?
No. Decoding and re-encoding both happen in this browser tab. No file name, image data or diagnostic information leaves your device.
Why did my AVIF fail to decode?
Either your browser has no AVIF support, or the file is damaged or uses a variant your browser does not handle. The tool reports the failure instead of saving an empty image.
What happens to transparency?
JPG fills transparent areas with white because it has no alpha channel. Choose PNG to keep transparency exactly.
Does it keep HDR?
No. The output is standard 8-bit sRGB, so HDR and wide-gamut data is flattened. We do not claim colour-managed conversion.
What about animated AVIF?
The container declares its frames, so the page warns you and converts the first frame only. The animation is not preserved.
What are the limits?
Up to 20.00 MB per file and 40 megapixels of output. Everything runs on your device's memory and processor.
