How it works

Good to know

  • Browser support. M4A is a container. Most files inside it are AAC, which current browsers can decode. The tool checks the real codec first and tells you if your browser cannot handle it.
  • Protected purchases. DRM-protected tracks cannot be converted, here or anywhere else in a browser.
  • Tags. Title, artist and artwork are not copied into the MP3; the audio is encoded fresh.

Questions & limits

Is my file uploaded?
No. The M4A is read, decoded and encoded by your browser in this tab. No file, file name or content is sent anywhere.
Does it work with Apple Lossless (ALAC)?
Only if your browser can decode ALAC, which most cannot. The tool asks the browser before starting and says clearly when the codec is not supported, instead of producing a silent file.
Why does it say my track cannot be converted?
Either the audio is DRM-protected, the codec inside the container is unknown, or this browser has no decoder for it. Trying Chrome, Edge or Safari can help, because browsers differ.
Which bitrate should I pick?
192 kbps is a good default. Voice memos are fine at 128 kbps. 320 kbps gives the largest file; it cannot add detail the M4A never contained.
What are the limits?
Up to 100 MiB per file and 10 minutes of audio, checked before any conversion starts.
